Scoliosis Treatment Costs in the UK: How Does Pricing Look?

Scoliosis Treatment Costs in the UK: How Does Pricing Look?

It can be difficult to understand how Scoliosis treatment pricing works, whether you’re exploring treatment options for yourself or a loved one, to make sure you make the correct choice for you and for peace of mind. Splitting it up into different elements of your treatment journey helps to make a clearer picture.

Consultations

The average in-clinic consultation in the UK ranges from £150 to £220 and often last for around 30 minutes.

At Scoliosis SOS, an hour consultation helps to build an understanding of your spinal curve, posture and appropriate management options going forward. Included in your consultation is a 4D radiation-free Formetric back scan to identify muscular imbalances, and you will also have your rotation measured. This comprehensive assessment from our scoliosis specialists helps to determine exactly which intensity of treatment would be most beneficial for you, as well as addressing other issues you may experience such as pain and cosmesis. This comes to £165 for the hour’s consultation.

The NHS do provide scoliosis consultations, however, the average wait-time for one of these are 16 months, and a scan isn’t typically conducted during this stage.

Scans

The next step after having a consultation is usually having a scan, which is usually an X-ray, but can also be an MRI. This step is highly important as it helps clinicians confirm, measure, and monitor the curve caused by scoliosis, whilst allowing your scoliosis to be categorised: mild, moderate or severe.

People often have x-rays when they’re suspected to have scoliosis, as it helps to accurately diagnose the condition, allowing professionals to measure the precise angle of the curve and monitor progression. Having an X-Ray on the NHS is free, but wait times can change regularly and vary based on the clinical urgency of the case. If you were to ‘go private’ for your x-ray, average prices in the UK range from £70-£200, with much shorter waiting times.

An MRI for scoliosis is sometimes considered, to rule out concern regarding abnormalities in your spinal cord, or if you have more intense symptoms such as numbness, weakness of loss of reflexes. If you are given an MRI scan within the NHS, there would be no cost, though waiting times range from a minimum of 6-18 weeks, but again these times are subject to frequent change. In private healthcare, prices often range from £200-£900 in the UK, and prices depend on how large the area is that is being scanned.

Here at Scoliosis SOS, we perform a radiation-free 4D Formetric back scan, and the price of this is included in your initial consultation. This scan is used to assess and monitor the curvature of your spine, by isolating anatomical markers of your back. With this scan, we’re able to measure and record patient’s body characteristics, posture, scoliosis, kyphosis, lordosis and other forms of spinal deformity.

Treatment

Bracing

Scoliosis bracing is designed to manipulate the position of the spine into a more central position to guide the formation of the spine throughout growth. This type of treatment is commonly recommended to patients who have not yet reached skeletal maturity, due to the risk of growth spurts which is when the curve has the most potential to progress. Bracing is available on the NHS, however, you may only be eligible for bracing if your cobb angle is greater than 25 degrees and less than 40 degrees during a standing x-ray. Although taking the NHS route is cost-free, children may be waiting around 1-2 years to get a brace fitted, during this time a growth spurt may occur. Similarly, the types of braces provided on the NHS are limited.

Our partner, the London Orthotic Consultancy (LOC) provide bespoke expert orthotic care. The LOC scoliosis brace package costs £3,182. The package below this consists of a 3D scan & measurements, a bespoke hyper-corrective brace, review, and fitting. Whereas the full LOC Scoliosis Brace treatment package, at £3,757, includes the LOC scoliosis bracing complemented by 5 hours of tailored physiotherapy at our Scoliosis SOS clinic.

Physiotherapy

General physiotherapy in the UK (private), usually ranges around £50-£150 per hour, depending on the practitioner’s experience and location. However, with scoliosis, more specialist-care is required such as Schroth-based therapy, which specifically focuses on postural corrections, rotational breathing and targeted exercises to improve spinal alignment.  Again, NHS physiotherapy may be prescribed to you, but the wait time is usually long, and the treatment isn’t highly specific or individualised. At our clinic, the ScolioGold method combines the best aspects of Physiotherapy Scoliosis Specific Exercises (PSSE) treatment from around the world into one ‘gold-standard’ approach. Each programme is completely customised and specific to the individual, as each person will respond differently to various methods. Here at Scoliosis SOS, our prices start at £125 for a 1:1 session, but booking blocks of sessions reduces this hourly rate, making ongoing care more accessible, as consistency is pertinent to results. Intensive group therapy options are also available.

Summary

In conclusion, the cost of scoliosis treatment in the UK can vary significantly, depending on the type of care you choose, the severity of the condition and how quickly you would like to begin treatment. NHS options are beneficial in reducing final strain, however the longer waiting times may impact how early an investigation and therefore treatment can begin.

Scoliosis SOS offers quicker access to assessments, scans, and specialist treatment, allowing for a more proactive and personalised approach. Understanding these differences can help you make an informed decision that best suits you and your circumstances.

If you’re considering treatment, the most important first step is getting a clear and accurate assessment of your spine which can be performed during an initial consultation.
