Yasamin came to London from Iran to receive non-surgical treatment for her scoliosis. Read on to find out about her Scoliosis SOS experience so far!

Scoliosis Patient from Iran

About a year and a half ago, Yasamin’s gym trainer raised concerns that there might be something wrong with Yasamin’s back. When Yasamin visited her doctor, her X-rays confirmed that she had a 60-degree scoliosis curve that would need to be operated on. Yasamin was very upset about this, but she wasn’t given any other option at the time. In the end, Yasamin decided that she would come to the UK to try the treatment offered by the Scoliosis SOS Clinic, and she was very excited to see London again after visiting as a young child some years prior.

Scoliosis treatment goals

Yasamin’s treatment goals include:
  • Avoiding scoliosis surgery
  • Being able to walk better
  • Stopping people from looking at her in a funny way
So far, her ScolioGold treatment has corrected her shoulder tilt, which is already making her feel much better about herself. Overall, she has been enjoying the course and getting on well with our physiotherapists, and she feels that she knows a lot more about her condition now than she did before. Yasamin will take home with her a much broader knowledge of how the stretches and exercises she’s doing are helping to correct her scoliosis.

Ian Before and After Scoliosis Treatment

Earlier this year, the Scoliosis SOS Clinic helped 16-year-old Ian from Ghana to overcome his 50-degree scoliosis. Ian’s spine began to develop a curve when he was 12 years old. As he grew, the curvature got bigger and bigger; when Ian’s mother noticed the condition of his spine, she became worried and sent Ian for some X-rays, which led to a scoliosis diagnosis. This came as a shock to Ian, who hadn’t even heard of scoliosis before, but he did some research and began to learn more about his condition and the treatments available. Unfortunately for Ian, the treatment options in Ghana were limited, but a friend of his mother recommended the Scoliosis SOS Clinic in London. Soon after, Ian left Ghana for the first time and came to the UK for a 4-week treatment course to help correct the curve in his spine. Ian faced some difficulties at the start of his treatment programme due to him being shy and sensitive about his condition. As time went by, however, Ian became much more comfortable, and by the end of the course he felt a lot more confident when showing his back and spine. Ian found our corrective exercises quite challenging at first, but as time passed, he became used to the exercises and was soon able to perform them without any problems. Throughout this whole process, Ian became more confident not just in the way he felt about his body, but also in a social sense, making lots of new friends from different parts of the world. Ian described the Scoliosis SOS therapists as “really encouraging” throughout his treatment course, helping him to get to know his body better and gain a greater understanding of his condition. To anybody else suffering from scoliosis, Ian recommends visiting the Scoliosis SOS Clinic to receive the same guidance and treatment that he had. Watch the video below for a full account of Ian’s story and to see how Scoliosis SOS were able to help him.

Scoliosis Treatment Sri Lanka

Here at Scoliosis SOS, we’ve treated people from all over the world – scoliosis sufferers of all ages have come from many, many different countries to receive non-surgical scoliosis treatment at our clinic in London. One of those countries is Sri Lanka, and one of our recent patients was the lovely 11-year-old Tiani Perera. This is her story.

Tiani’s Story: Young Scoliosis Patient from Sri Lanka

In many cases, overseas patients come to us when the only option they’ve been given is spinal fusion surgery. We offer an alternative to this, and so patients travel from far and wide to receive treatment here at the Scoliosis SOS Clinic. This was the case with Tiani, and when she was offered surgical treatment in Sri Lanka, she decided instead to come and visit us in London. Tiani was diagnosed with scoliosis at home in Sri Lanka in 2015. The first indication that she had scoliosis was that her shoulders were not level; furthermore, when she bent over (see Adam’s forward bend test), a small hump was visible below her right shoulder blade.  When Tiani’s parents noticed these symptoms, they took her to the doctor, who confirmed her spinal curvature and stated that surgery was the only viable treatment option. However, Tiani was too young for surgery at the time (since her body was still growing), and so she had to wear a brace first. Due to the severity of Tiani’s condition, she struggled to sit comfortably in school and would often feel pain in her back before going to bed at night. She didn’t want to have surgery, and so when her family were told about Scoliosis SOS and our highly effective non-surgical treatment methods, they decided to make the 11-hour trip to our clinic in London. Tiani underwent a 4-week ScolioGold treatment course and was very pleased with the results. Her rotation improved by eight degrees, she was no longer in pain, and she found that her shoulders and hips had become realigned again.

Tiani is one of the many scoliosis sufferers from other countries that we have treated here at the Scoliosis SOS Clinic. If you would like to learn more about our ScolioGold courses, please click here – or get in touch to arrange an initial consultation.

Why do people choose to travel to our clinic?

Having scanned the long list of countries above, you may be wondering why exactly the Scoliosis SOS Clinic is worth a long journey to London from Tanzania or Peru or New Zealand. In other words: why do people from every corner of the globe come to our clinic in England?
The answer is rooted in the fact that we specialise in non-surgical treatment for scoliosis and other spinal conditions. In most parts of the world, the standard treatment route for scoliosis sufferers involves wearing an uncomfortable plastic brace and undergoing surgery if the curve progresses past a certain point. Here at Scoliosis SOS, we offer a real alternative to surgical intervention: ScolioGold therapy, our own treatment programme which is based on the Schroth method but also incorporates numerous other approaches.
For years now, ScolioGold treatment has been reducing Cobb angles and improving quality of life among scoliosis patients from all sorts of backgrounds. Effective non-surgical treatments for scoliosis are unfortunately still unavailable in many countries, and this – combined with the worldwide word-of-mouth advertising that our happy patients provide for us upon returning home – goes a long way to explaining why people are prepared to travel long distances to benefit from our own treatment methods.
No matter where in the world you live, if you are suffering from a curved spine, we would love to hear from you. Contact Scoliosis SOS today to arrange an initial consultation – this can be carried out via Skype or over the telephone if you don’t live anywhere near London.
Axel from Sweden
Although the Scoliosis SOS Clinic is based in London, we consider ourselves to be an international treatment centre – just take a look at the overseas patient case studies featured on our website.
Over the years, we have treated patients from a huge array of countries. Scoliosis sufferers have come to us from North America, Africa, Asia and Oceania, not to mention our many patients from across the European continent. This includes several patients from the Scandinavian region – patients such as Axel Von Sydow, who travelled from Sweden to enrol on one of our 2-week fast-track courses.
Axel suffers from a condition called Scheuermann’s disease, which manifests itself in the form of a rounded upper back (hyperkyphosis). The effects of hyperkyphosis are similar to the effects of scoliosis, except for the fact that the condition causes the spine to curve forward rather than sideways. Like scoliosis, the condition can be very painful for those who suffer from it, particularly following periods of exercise or long spells of inactivity. This was certainly the case for Axel, who first noticed his condition during his time as a teenage ice hockey player. Axel noticed that his back often felt stiff after playing sports, and after undergoing further medical investigation, he was diagnosed with Scheuermann’s.
Although Axel found that he was able to manage his condition for many years, he noticed that as he got older, he was finding it increasingly difficult to cope with the symptoms of his hyperkyphosis – particularly the feelings of fatigue. This was especially problematic for his job as a software developer, which required him to sit down in the same position for long periods of time. Having heard about Scoliosis SOS from his mother, who had been researching Axel’s condition online, Axel decided to look into our treatment options further and find out about some of our previous hyperkyphosis cases.
Impressed by what he found online, Axel booked onto one of our fast-track courses, making the journey over from Sweden to begin his treatment at the Scoliosis SOS Clinic in London. Our 2-week courses combine course exercise classes with one-on-one treatments with our therapists, allowing patients to fine-tune their programme in order to relieve the symptoms of their own spinal curvature. This is particularly helpful for patients from overseas, as it allows them to identify and perfect a specially-tailored set of movements for treating their condition in only a short space of time. These exercises can then be performed by the patient themselves in order to continue the progress made at our clinic.
