Noonan syndrome and scoliosis

Noonan syndrome is a congenital disorder that can impact the formation and development of several areas of the body. Characterised by a variety of distinctive features – including facial abnormalities, stunted height and heart defects – Noonan syndrome is caused by a mutation of one or more genes. According to the NHS, it’s estimated that the number of children born with Noonan syndrome is somewhere between 1 in 1000 and 1 in 2500. The condition affects all ethnicities and sexes equally. Notably, children with Noonan syndrome are also more susceptible to spinal conditions such as scoliosis.

Scoliosis as a result of Noonan syndrome

In 2001, a Korean study carried out by the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery in Seoul National University Hospital scientifically proved the correlation between scoliosis and Noonan syndrome. Of the 60 patients with Noonan syndrome included in this study, 30% were found to have spinal deformities. Of those patients, two patients had congenital deformities, while the remaining 16 were diagnosed with scoliosis. Based on the evidence provided, the study concluded that scoliosis with an associated thoracic lordosis occurs more frequently in Noonan syndrome than had been previously reported. Today the relationship is well-documented, and early assessment of children with Noonan syndrome is recommended to ensure prompt detection and advanced treatment of scoliosis symptoms.

Treating scoliosis in Noonan syndrome patients

We at the Scoliosis SOS Clinic treat scoliosis in people of all ages and backgrounds. Our non-surgical treatment courses are ideal for all manner of individuals, including those with Noonan syndrome. Combining the tried and tested Schroth method with an assortment of additional complementary techniques, our ScolioGold programme is designed to promote natural correction of asymmetric posture without invasive surgery. Our treatment method has an unrivalled level of success, providing significant relief to most patients within just a few weeks. Better still, our methods are continuously evolving in line with medical breakthroughs and non-surgical development, allowing us to modify and improve our programme as the scientific study of scoliosis advances.

Here at Scoliosis SOS, we have spent a number of years developing our sophisticated ScolioGold treatment method, to ensure that you receive an unrivalled level of treatment success, that is not available anywhere else. The Schroth Method has been an essential part of our non-surgical treatment process since our clinic first opened, and remains a vital aspect of our treatment programme.
Unfortunately the Schroth Method has its limitations, so we have combined this treatment approach with an array of other scientifically-proven and established techniques, in order to ensure that every aspect of each patient’s condition is fully addressed.
One such technique is the FITS Method, which stands for Functional Independent Treatment for Scoliosis. This method usually consists of an individually adjusted programme of exercises, depending on the degree of spinal curve and following a clinical examination of a patient.

Why the FITS Method is included in our treatment programme

The FITS Method consists of two stages, the detection and elimination of myofascial restrictions, and the construction of a series of new corrective posture patterns in everyday activities. The FITS method is an individually tailored therapy, which can be used on patients of any age, with varying degrees of Cobb Angle. It is required that patients take an active part in the process of therapy, by ensuring that they maintain their correct posture in everyday activities, be it at the work desk, or at home watching television.
In scoliosis treatment, the main aim is to correct the primary structural curve in three planes, which is why we include the FITS method in our ScolioGold programme. As previously mentioned, the technique has been thoroughly researched and scientifically proven, which means that each patient can be assured that they are in safe and experienced hands when receiving their treatment.

Spinal Fusion Recovery

Scoliosis can be an incredibly debilitating condition, and many scoliosis sufferers choose to undergo surgery to correct their spinal curves. Spinal fusion surgery is the process of attaching rods, hooks, wires or screws to the curved portion of the patient’s backbone in order to straighten out the curve over time. Small pieces of bone are then placed over the spine; these will eventually grow together with the spinal bone, ‘fusing’ it into the correct position.

The spinal fusion procedure is a major surgical operation that usually takes several hours to complete. The success of the operation depends on many factors, including the flexibility of the curve and the surgical techniques used. The goal of the surgery is not a perfectly straight spine, but a balanced spine in which fusion prevents the curve from getting worse.

However, as with most surgical procedures, a spinal fusion usually carries with it a long recovery period. Some pain/discomfort is to be expected, and reduced mobility and flexibility are common too. After surgery, the symptoms of scoliosis (e.g. back pain) may get better over time, although it is not uncommon to for patients to still experience pain even after they have fully recovered due to the fact that their muscle imbalance has not been addressed.

So how can Scoliosis SOS help with spinal fusion recovery?

If you have had spinal fusion surgery already and you’re looking for something to speed up the recovery process or reduce any back pain you are still experiencing, then our ScolioGold method could be the solution you’re looking for. You may have heard of the Schroth method, and this forms a large part of our methodology, but where some clinics solely utilise Schroth exercises we compliment them with a range of other non-surgical spinal treatment techniques, resulting in a far more well-rounded treatment regime that our patients find exceptionally effective.

Here’s how our treatment courses can help with spinal fusion recovery:
  • Reduce back pain
  • Improve mobility
  • Speed up correction of spinal curve
  • Correct any secondary curvatures that may have progressed or developed above/below the fusion
The video below features one of our patients from the Faroe Islands. She had spinal fusion surgery on her back when she was much younger, but visited the Scoliosis SOS Clinic earlier this year to address the chronic pain that she was still experiencing.

Scoliosis treatment courses
If you’ve read about the benefits of our non-surgical scoliosis therapy and decided that a Scoliosis SOS treatment course is the right choice for your spinal condition, you may be wondering what the next step is.
Here’s how to get in touch with the Scoliosis SOS clinic, arrange your initial consultation, and book a place on one of our ScolioGold courses:

Step 1 – Browse Upcoming Course Dates

Before you contact the clinic, we recommend that you take a look at our list of upcoming course dates to get a rough idea of when you’d like to visit us. Courses typically last 4 weeks, and can either be completed in one go or split into two shorter periods of 2 weeks each.
If neither of these options suit your schedule, we also offer premium “Pick ‘n’ Mix” courses that allow you to complete your treatment course over a number of shorter periods.

Step 2 – Arrange an Initial Consultation

Once you’ve viewed our available course dates, head over to our Contact page and submit your details using the form provided. You’ll need to give a brief description of your current condition, along with the following information:
  • When your condition was diagnosed
  • The angle of your spinal condition (if you know it)
  • Whether or not you have worn a brace, undergone surgery, and/or received any other treatment for your condition
Once you’ve entered all of this information, you will have the opportunity to request a consultation with a member of the Scoliosis SOS team. This session can be conducted in person, via Skype, or over the phone – the choice is yours. Consultations can be scheduled for any time between 9am and 6pm, Monday to Friday.

Step 3 – Book Your Course

The initial consultation allows us to assess your spinal condition in more detail and decide whether ScolioGold therapy would be an appropriate course of action. If so, we will be in touch to help you book a place on the course dates that best suit you. We can also arrange accommodation in London if you will need a place to stay over the course of your treatment programme.
Our treatment courses get booked up very quickly, so don’t delay – browse our upcoming course dates now, and then contact us to get the ball rolling!
Clinic Manager Jason, who has been studying Polish in his spare time, has recently returned from the final of three week-long courses to learn the FITS (Functional Individual Treatment for Scoliosis) method in Wrocław, western Poland. He has been hard at work integrating it into our ScolioGold method and sharing his experience with the rest of team. Therapists Chrissy and Michael really enjoyed their first in-service training session about this Polish scoliosis therapy and have already started using some techniques with their check-up patients.
