How does an Online Initial Consultation at Scoliosis SOS work?

How does an Online Initial Consultation at Scoliosis SOS work?

If you or your child has recently been diagnosed with scoliosis or another postural condition, it’s natural to feel overwhelmed and full of questions. At Scoliosis SOS, our online initial consultations are designed to offer clarity, reassurance and a personalised path forward – no matter where you are in the world. Here’s what to expect when you book your first virtual appointment with us.

Who Are Online Consultations Suitable For?

Our online consultations are ideal for those who are unable to attend an in-person consultation at one of our clinics in London, Birmingham, Bristol, or Manchester.

Our consultations are ideal for:

  • Individuals recently diagnosed with scoliosis or other spinal conditions.
  • Individuals who want expert guidance for their condition.
  • Those who are exploring non-surgical treatment options.
  • Those who have symptoms of scoliosis or other spinal conditions.

Whether you’re at the very beginning of your scoliosis journey or already undergoing care elsewhere, an online consultation can provide expert insight and help you make informed decisions about your next steps.

What Is The Purpose Of an Online Consultation?

The purpose of an online consultation is to evaluate your current condition by reviewing your symptoms, medical history, and any available imaging. This helps us assess your suitability for our exercise-based treatment program. Based on this assessment, we will tailor a personalised plan to meet your needs and abilities, providing you with clear recommendations on the best path forward. During the consultation, we’ll also address any questions you have about scoliosis, non-surgical treatment options, and what a customised treatment plan could look like for you.

What To Prepare Ahead Of Your Appointment

To get the most out of your consultation, it’s helpful to prepare the following in advance:

  • Any recent x-rays or MRI scans – Ideally, we would like to see the most up to date images of your spine. If you have digital copies, these can be emailed to us ahead of your appointment.
  • Photograph of your back – We would like to see a photo of your back from behind, the side and whilst performing the Adams Forward Bend. This allows us to assess any postural imbalances and gives us a clearer understanding of your condition and the severity.
  • Relevant medical history Please let us know before your appointment of any significant medical history that the scoliosis specialist needs to be made aware of. It is also helpful for us to know if you have been diagnoses with scoliosis or another condition, any treatments you’ve tried, or surgeries you’ve undergone.

Questions you’d like answered – Think about what you want to know. Whether it’s about exercises, long-term outlook, or how our programme compares to others, no question is too small.

What to expect during your appointment

Your virtual consultation will typically last around 45 minutes and will be conducted via Microsoft Teams or Zoom, you will receive a link in advance.

Comprehensive Medical History

Your consultation will usually begin with a review of your medical history which helps our scoliosis specialist understand your condition more thoroughly. You’ll be asked to provide information about your symptoms, past medical history and any prior treatment or surgeries. This information is essential for our specialists to assess the potential severity of your condition and begin planning your treatment accordingly.

Education and Imaging Analysis

Once we have thoroughly reviewed your medical history, we’ll dive into the next step of your virtual consultation, analysing any imaging you’ve shared with us, such as X-rays, photos, or any other relevant scans. Our team of specialists will carefully examine these images to gain a clear and precise understanding of your scoliosis condition. During this process we will assess the overall impact your condition is having on your posture and alignment.

Afterward, we will talk you through the findings in a detailed and easy-to-understand manner. This is an essential part of your consultation as it provides you with a comprehensive understanding of your condition. We’ll explain the significance of the images, offer insights into how scoliosis is affecting your body, and provide clarity on the next steps for managing and improving your spinal health. Our goal is to ensure that you feel informed and empowered to make the best decisions for your treatment plan moving forward.

Treatment Planning: Your Path to Better Spinal Health

The information gathered from your medical history and examination will guide this process. Whether your scoliosis is mild, moderate, or severe, the treatment plan will be tailored to meet your specific needs and goals. We have a variety of treatment plans available for those who don’t have Scoliosis and present with other spinal conditions, deformities or postural imbalances. There is a treatment option for everyone!
