Behind the spotlight, beyond the headlines, and beneath the polished images we see every day, many well-known figures share a story that rarely takes the spotlight. You may have more inn common with these famous faces than you might realise. Scoliosis, a condition that creates a lateral curvature in the spine, has been part of the lives of numerous celebrities, athletes, and public figures, some of which will be explored in this blog. These are cases of resilience, adaptation, and strength – reminding us that even those who seem larger than life navigate challenges that may feel deeply familiar and how common, and human, this journey really is.
1. Usain Bolt
Known as “the fastest man alive”, Usain bolt has a scoliosis diagnosis. In an interview with ESPN, he says:
“When I was younger it wasn’t really a problem. But you grow and it gets worse. My spine’s really curved… but if I keep my core and back strong, the scoliosis doesn’t really bother me… The early part of my career, when we didn’t really know much about it, it really hampered me because I got injured every year.”
This highlights the importance of strengthening as part of scoliosis management, but also shows that the condition doesn’t mean you are physically incapable!
2. Elizabeth Taylor
Elizabeth Taylor was one of the most popular stars of classical Hollywood cinema in the 1950s, and simultaneously lived with scoliosis. In an interview on CNN, she mentions that she was born with scoliosis, and admitted having suffered back problems since she was a teen.
3. Shailene Woodley
In an ‘Independent’ interview, the ‘Divergent’ star revealed that she had a 38 degree scoliotic curve and had to wear a scoliosis brace for 18 hours daily for two years.
4. Sarah Michelle Gellar
Sarah Michelle Gellar, of ‘Buffy the Vampire Slayer’ and ‘Scooby-Doo’, is very open about the fact that she “grew up with, and I still [has], major scoliosis.”
5. Rita Simons
Eastenders star Rita Simons has been open about her scoliosis diagnosis, and the treatments she has tried for it:
“It’s so important to keep training when you have scoliosis – but in the right way. I do loads of strengthening and physio for the curve in my spine and it keeps me out of pain”
A physio approach that she used is the ScolioGold method at the Scoliosis SOS Clinic!
6. Kurt Cobain
Nirvana lead vocalist, guitarist, and primary songwriter Kurt Cobain often spoke about being diagnosed with scoliosis in junior high, and how his posture when constantly using a heavy guitar may have exacerbated this. He was also open about the pain he experienced, and how this influenced his music style.
7. John Lydon AKA “Johnny Rotten”
Lead Singer of the Sex Pistols John Lydon AKA ‘Johnny Rotten’, suffered with severe spinal meningitis at the age of 7, which left him with a permanent curvature in his spine.
8. Pharoah Tutankhamun
CT scans of King Tutankhamun’s mummy reveal that the pharaoh suffered from a mild form of scoliosis due to the discovery of a lateral curvature in his spine. The spinal defect appears to have been passed down too; evidence suggests that one of Tutankhamun’s own children, who died in infancy and was buried with him, also suffered from scoliosis.
9. King Richard III of England
Upon discovery of Richard III’s skeleton in 2012, it was also discovered that he had Adolescent Idiopathic Scoliosis, with a right-sided spinal curvature estimated to be between 70-90 degrees, with vertebral wedging indicating the structural nature of his scoliosis.
10. Princess Eugenie of York
At 12 years old, Princess Eugenie of York was diagnosed with scoliosis and underwent spinal fusion surgery. 16 years later, the princess chose to wear a wedding dress that showed her scar as she hoped it would honour those who had helped her and inspire others with scoliosis.
These famous faces are well-known beyond their spinal curvature, showing that scoliosis doesn’t define a person, and it doesn’t have to define you.
