What to Expect from your Check-Up Appointment

What to Expect from your Check-Up Appointment

What is a Check-Up Appointment?

Your care doesn’t stop after your initial course of treatment; your condition will be consistently monitored with frequent check-up appointments. After completing your treatment at Scoliosis SOS, you will be provided with an individualised Home Exercise Plan of Physiotherapeutic Scoliosis Specific Exercises that you learned under our care, to maintain and develop your progress at home. A few months after this, a check-up appointment is prescribed, in order to re-take your scans and measurements, as well as reviewing your home exercise plan. During this appointment your therapist will discuss any changes in your medical history and come up with new goals.

How often are Check-Up Appointments?

It is generally recommended that patients over the age of 18 should return for a check-up every 6 months, but those under 18 should return more frequently, every 3 months, to monitor the progression of the condition for best results. These are just general guidelines and may differ depending on your individual case but keeping on top of check-up appointments is a vital part of your long-term scoliosis management plan, so don’t forget to book in!

What to Prepare Ahead of your Appointment

Ahead of attending your check-up appointment, whether it be virtual or in person, there are some things to consider. Make sure you are aware of your most recent Home Exercise Plan – we will have a copy but it’s still handy that you know what you typically do during your home treatment. If you have any questions or concerns about your plan, your condition, or anything at all regarding your scoliosis, your check-up appointment is the perfect opportunity to bring them to light – note them down and your therapist will be delighted to help!

What happens during the Check-Up Appointment?

During the check-up appointment, if you are attending in-person, your measurements will be taken first, to track your progress since your treatment. This will include your height, weight, rotation, and spirometry. Another 4D Formetric scan will also be taken to gain a clearer picture of your progress by comparing to your previous scans. From then, the scan will be explored, allowing us to redirect focus during the home exercise plan if necessary. If your check-up appointment is virtual, please send in photos of your back prior to your session.

Following on from this, you will go through your home exercise plan with the therapist, ensuring everything is being done correctly at home, and trialing new adaptations and progressions/regressions for further development. Based on the scan, as well as your personal feedback during this time, exercises may be switched in and out to increase variability and to shift focus to areas that may require a little more care. If your therapist sees it as suitable, you may also be taught some new exercises based on our ScolioGold Method.

You may request to use any spare time in the session to be used for manual therapy such as massage or dry needling, or to carry on with your exercises to tuck it off of your daily exercise schedule!
