Where did it start?
One of the original approaches to treating scoliosis whilst avoiding surgical intervention is the use of an exercise based physical therapy programme called the Schroth Method. This method was derived in Germany in 1921 by Katarina Schroth, a physiotherapist who suffered with scoliosis and successfully formulated her own treatment using mirrors. Her achievements in self-treatment led to the development of a clinic to treat others with scoliosis following her method.

The Schroth Method adopts a three-dimensional approach, considering the effects of scoliosis in all three planes of movement: sagittal, frontal and transverse. By taking all of these into account, it can focus on elongating, stabilising, and de-rotating the spine, with the intention of reducing pain, limiting curve progression, and improving posture and function. To do so, a plethora of corrective breathing techniques, stretches, and strength-based exercises are prescribed. Even following Schroth’s passing in 1985, the Schroth method has been continually used as a successful physical therapy approach for scoliosis patients across the world, and was even the original primary method used at Scoliosis SOS Clinic throughout its early days. This just goes to show the effectiveness of the method, with numerous studies confirming the single treatment method as impactive on reducing or controlling the development of scoliosis.
So where does Rigo come in?

“Looking after the PERSON, not just the curve” – Dr Manuel Rigo
Dr Manuel Rigo taught the Schroth method to physiotherapists in Spain in the 1980’s but eventually, his teachings evolved, thus modifying the original Schroth Method to a more personalised approach for the patients. Whilst still referring to the main Schroth practices, the course structure that Rigo taught tailored the exercises to their individual curve patterns, and also increased the therapist’s attention to the patients. This then became known as the Rigo-Schroth method, with practitioners that are taught this approach being certified under the ‘Rigo Concept (BSPTS)’.
How is this used at Scoliosis SOS Clinic?
In a similar way to Rigo, the Scoliosis SOS Clinic has created its own approach to treating scoliosis with physical therapy, called the ScolioGold method. This method has made unique combinations of methods to create a gold standard of treatment, with principal components coming from Schroth and Rigo-Schroth approaches being at the core. Various other techniques are incorporated, including but not limited to more modern techniques such as FITS, and more generic techniques such as PNF. With so many world-renown elements to ScolioGold, you can be sure you will be receiving a well-rounded yet tailored approach to your scoliosis at Scoliosis SOS Clinic.
