If you or your child has recently been diagnosed with scoliosis or another postural condition, such as hyperkyphosis, it’s natural to have questions, and maybe even a few worries. At Scoliosis SOS, our goal is to make every step of your journey clear, supportive and empowering.
Your Initial Consultation is the first step towards understanding your spine, your posture, and how our specialist team can help you manage or improve your condition. Here’s what to expect from your very first visit.
A Personal and Supportive Start

Every consultation begins with a warm welcome from one of our experienced scoliosis consultants. We take time to listen carefully to your story – how and when your scoliosis was diagnosed, any symptoms you’re currently experiencing, and what you hope to achieve from treatment.
Many of our patients come to us feeling frustrated or confused after seeing multiple specialists and receiving differing advice. On the other hand, some patients haven’t been able to see a specialist due to the long NHS waiting times or referral delays, and are seeking answers or reassurance about their condition.
That’s why we make sure this first session is as much about listening and understanding as it is about assessment. Whether you’ve already seen several clinicians or are just beginning your scoliosis journey, we meet you where you are. By understanding your lifestyle, activity levels, and concerns, we can begin to create a plan that fits you perfectly.
Postural and Physical Assessment

Once we’ve discussed your background and goals, your consultant will carry out a detailed postural and functional assessment. This helps us understand exactly how your scoliosis is affecting your body mechanics and movement patterns.
During this part of the consultation, we carefully observe your back in standing to identify any postural asymmetries or imbalances, we will then ask you to perform a forward bend (the Adam’s Forward Bend Test) to highlight any spinal rotation / asymmetries. A scoliometer will also be used to measure the degree of trunk rotation, which gives us a better understanding of your curve and the severity.
To provide an even more detailed insight into your posture and spinal alignment, we take a radiation free scan of your back using our state-of-the-art DIERS Formetric Scanner. This safe, non-invasive scan, produces a 3D image of the back, showing the curves, asymmetries and muscle imbalances without exposing you to any x-rays. It’s a key tool that helps us track progress over time and tailor your treatment precisely to your needs.
By combining these clinical tests, observations and the DIERS scan, we can build a complete, accurate picture of your scoliosis and how it affects your overall posture, movement and wellbeing.
Education and Understanding Your Results
After your assessment, we take time to go through your findings in detail. Your consultant will review your scan results and explain what they show, from the degree of rotation to the areas of imbalance or asymmetries. Many patients tell us it’s the first time they’ve truly understood how their scoliosis affects their posture and body alignment.
Your consultant will explain these findings in simple, easy-to-understand language, helping you connect what you see on the scan to what you feel day to day.
This educational element is a core part of every Scoliosis SOS consultation. We believe that understanding your spine empowers you to take an active role in your treatment and long-term care.
Tailored Recommendations and Next Steps
During this time, you will have the opportunity to ask questions, discuss goals and explore the treatment options available at Scoliosis SOS.
For many patients, we recommend our ScolioGold programme, our most effective form of treatment combining the best elements of multiple scoliosis-specific exercise methos, including Schroth, SEAS, FITS and PNF techniques. Your consultant will explain how this can help improve posture, strength, spinal alignment and pain and how long is needed to achieve results.

Leaving with Clarity and Confidence
At the end of your consultation, we will provide you with a clear summary of everything discussed, including your next steps. If you decide to proceed with treatment, we’ll help you plan your treatment schedule and answer any questions about availability, duration and pricing.
Most importantly, you’ll leave your consultation with a renewed sense of control and confidence. Many of our patients tell us that simply understanding their spine and having a clear plan of action makes a huge difference to how they feel.
