Scoliosis Assessment

Scoliosis Assessment

A scoliosis appointment must first be scheduled before starting private physiotherapy with us. This can help you better understand not only what is scoliosis, but also inform us about your specific needs and goals. A scoliosis consultation will allow us to determine the best course of action for your treatment.

Why do I need an initial consultation?

The reason for this initial spine consultation is so we can be sure that the patient will benefit from our treatment programme and that ScolioGold therapy will be suitable and effective for their back condition.

Understanding Your Spinal Condition

Understanding the condition of your spine can help you better understand the problems that may be associated with various injuries or conditions that affect your spine. While some spinal conditions are idiopathic, such as idiopathic scoliosis, others might be a result of injury or trauma.

Knowing your spinal condition can help you make informed decisions about modifying your lifestyle to improve your health and wellbeing. From back pain to stiffness, your spinal condition can indicate numerous things to consider.

What to expect from your scoliosis assessment:

Your consultation appointment will last between 40 and 60 minutes, depending on your condition and the number of questions you may wish to ask.

The scoliosis screening will involve a consultant who will go through your medical history as it pertains to your spinal condition. They will also ask about the symptoms you currently experience (such as back pain or compromised breathing) and any treatments you have previously undergone for your back problems.

Next in your assessment for scoliosis, your consultant will conduct a medical examination and evaluation of your spine and back, which may also involve posture analysis and other tests. This will include taking two measurements: the first allows us to assess the rotation (for scoliosis patients) or kyphosis/forward bend (for hyperkyphosis/posture patients) of your spine; the second is a radiation-free back scan, during which a light is projected onto your back and a photograph taken (the computer then analyses this image to calculate your back shape and profile). A copy of this scan will be provided for your records and both sets of results discussed with you fully during your visit.

The Role of a Comprehensive Medical Examination

A comprehensive medical examination can help with helping both yourself and the medical professional understand your spinal condition. By knowing the patient’s medical history, symptoms, goals, and needs, your doctor can make well-informed decisions about how to proceed with your treatment for scoliosis.

  • Summarising the clinical diagnosis
  • Proposed treatment (including expected outcomes)
  • Timescales

You will also be given the opportunity to briefly visit one of our treatment rooms to see a ScolioGold therapy session in progress and meet some of our current patients.

You are under no obligation to book treatment after attending an initial spine consultation. However, if you want to make a fully-informed decision about your treatment choice (i.e. whether to choose a surgical or non-surgical route), then we would recommend that you avail yourself with the facts and risks before making the decision, which will most certainly be life-changing.

Discussing Your Condition and Treatment Options

During the physiotherapy consultation, the consultant will explain your condition in detail and discuss the various treatment options that are available for you. This may include a combination of therapies, exercises, and even medication to help improve your health and relieve pain.

The Importance of a Companion During Your Consultation

We encourage patients to bring a companion during the consultation, no matter if that’s a partner, friend or family member. Having a companion can help you feel more at ease, providing moral support that you might need.

What Happens After Your Consultation?

After the consultation, we’ll begin the next steps in crafting a private physiotherapy plan that works for you.

Observing a Therapy Session

At Scoliosis SOS, we also provide the opportunity for patients to observe a therapy session and meet existing patients for a glimpse into how we work and the services that we offer. This can help potential patients determine whether our treatments are right for them.
